696 Welfare Division

Description

In 1970, following a restructure the Welfare Division was headed up by an Assistant Administrator with responsibility for following four branches: Education Branch, Projects and Services Branch, Research Branch, and the Executive Services Branch. The three administrative and operational Divisions remained, as did the associated districts: Northern Division (Leichhardt District, Cadell District, Gregory District); Eastern Division (Flinders District, Tasman District); and, South Division (Lindsay District, Warburton District, and Giles District).
As a result of the administrative changes of 19 December 1972, some of the functions of the Welfare Division were divided between the newly created Commonwealth Departments, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Department of Health and Education. The Adelaide office and staff of the Welfare Division were transferred to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs. The remaining functions (adoption, child welfare, social welfare, foster care) were transferred to the Social Development Branch in the Department of the Northern Territory. Up to 1974, the Northern Territory arranged for, and placed, children to be adopted by parents living in Papua New Guinea.

Creation

In 1970, the Welfare Branch was restructured and became the Welfare Division.

Abolition
